Feeling Quite at Home
These signs are on the wall in a county conference room
in which I took some training recently.
They made me feel seriously welcome.

At the Emporium Garden
These photos offer just a taste
of what greets you
at The Emporium Garden
in Hanford, CA, USA.

Chair #23
A quiet place to stop and rest
as you wander the trails
near the lighthouse on
Sanibel Island,
Florida, USA.

Outdoor Art
Public art,
in the courtyard of city facilities.
Due to the drought
the fountain has been turned off for years.
The simple trick of raising the bands in the middle
gives dimension and a sense of motion.

Pavement Penny
Can you see the penny?
Look closer:
The penny is embedded in the surface of the street.

J. M. Rustigian Building, 1920
If you zoom in, you can read the "banner" above the terra cotta.
It reads, "J. M. Rustigian Building,"
and just above that is imprinted (engraved? embossed?)
1920.
So this building is approaching its 100th anniversary.
I love the details, especially the way it has been freshly painted.

SUNK
Tagging the top of a grain elevator.
Bold.
Took me a bit to figure out what the "fancy"
calligraphy said.
SUNK.
Then I saw the smaller, simpler version
on the side of the building below,
like a legend or a footnote.

Revival
REVIVAL church in downtown Fresno.
This architectural style puts me in mind of "the Old World."

A Small Gathering of Vintage Pieces
An old wooden box rests comfortably on a metal tractor seat
while a dapper gent appears to shoulder a cylindrical lampshade
and a bright yellow gas pump looks on with apparent interest.

Unexpected Face #22
This bag goes to work with me every day.
It seems to be happy with the arrangement.

Study in Lines
Surprising the number
of lines, shapes,
convergences,
reflection,
light and shadow...
...then the small detail
of the scrollwork
in the pieces of wood
under the eaves.
Taken 30 January 2019.

Defunct Pump House
This old pump house
has some character.
I wonder what used to be
in that round medallion above the door.

Tattered Billboard on Broadway
Took this photo for the tattered billboard,
but other elements add
interesting texture, shapes, and lines.
And all ON BROADWAY!

Brian's and La Piedad
Signs, poles, roofs, and windows.
Not sure how I managed to get that pole
going right through the vertical axis
of the La Piedad sign.
It reads,
"Mercado y Carniceria."

Cloudy Sky Water Tower
This photo might be a bit better
without the power line,
but the dramatic diagonal slash
adds an element of interest, right?

Cowboy Cafe
A relatively simple facade
that is nevertheless reminiscent
of The Alamo;
bull-riding silhouette
against a western sunset;
palm tree,
blue sky;
what more could one ask?
