The Remnant

Seventh Day Adventist Church

Blue-gray paint almost matches the tone of the sky.

I was a little concerned about the "crime scene" tape

at the entrance, then realized it was standard "caution/cuidado" tape

protecting newly installed tile and handrails on the steps.

Two Palms

I am convinced that at some time in the past

these palms marked some kind of entrance;

like on either side of a driveway, or sidewalk

leading up to the front entrance of a building.

Now they stand guard over a large vacant lot.

Venerable Edifice

Not sure what its purpose was

when it was built (mid-20th century),

but now it guards the entrance to

a phalanx of storage units.

Cloud, Sky, Tree

I noticed the blue sky and the fluffy cloud,

and I always like palm trees...

but what really caught my attention

was the stylized holiday tree

hugging the lamp post.

A west coast favorite

for sixty-five years.

Blue skies,

sunshine,

palm trees -

and the iconic

logo-sign -

how can we resist?

Palms and Fountains in Anaheim

Anaheim Convention Center,

arena peeking into the photo from left

like what is being called a "photo bomb" these days;

similarly the flagpole finial in the center of the pic

jutting toward the fountain...

"Big A" sculpture in the distance,

and beyond that a glimpse of 

Disney's "California Adventure" amusement park.

Palm trees,

concentric decorative paving...

very nearly too many elements in this photo.

Licata Building, Ybor City

Spotted this lovely old edifice

on the main drag in Ybor City,

Tampa, Florida.

I like the blond brick,

and the simple but elegant

architectural lines.

Can't decide whether

to be encouraged

or bummed out

about the place

housing a

"Rock n Roll Bar"...

Certainly better than holding

nothing but emptiness and desolation.

decided that

since this rooftop was going to be visible

from the Anaheim Convention Center

it needed to display

something

less mundane

than tar and grey gravel.

Good decision.

Semaphore Palms

Like giant feathers

dusting the sky...

these palm fronds

are sending messages

to an unknown recipient

using an secret language

of botanical semaphore;

or maybe

they are doing

a tango.

Garden Grove Architecture

I decided

to make the Southern California architecture

posts

a threesome:

Within a stone's throw of Disneyland

is this eye-popping Glass House,

actually called "The Crystal Cathedral."

Note the "breezeway" in the pic above.

filed for bankruptcy

a week after I took these pictures.

Cigar Factory with Palm

This former cigar factory in Ybor City,

Tampa, Florida,

has been converted to office space.

Attractive in the most literal sense:

Shape and shadow of the arch detail above the windows,

brickwork "ledge" below second-story windows,

neatly painted crown detail across the top.

Note the iron hinges on either side of each window;

one lonely pair of shutters remains to explain and represent.

Benches From Above

This is an artful courtyard,

especially from a bird's eye view.

The pattern of the benches appears to be some kind of hieroglyphic...

or Morse Code...

or Alien Alphabet...

Whatever,

it is very pleasant to behold.

Palm Sky

Palm trees are one of my favorite subjects.

I should probably number palm tree related posts in series to keep track,

but I fear the number might climb too high.

Trees After Dark

The flash on the branches with the dark sky behind evokes other natural images

such as lightning, roots, veins.

The result manages to be interesting but slightly disturbing.
