Blue Wall #6

Almost an optical illusion effect

of the light, shadow, lines, and texture.

Plus the appeal of the worn paint

and the graffiti.

Concrete and Metal

No curves allowed.

It's just metal and concrete.

A utilitarian installation

hidden in the corner

of a much grander edifice

(the Anaheim Convention Center);

but the counterplay

of repeating straight lines,

light and shadow,

in neutral shades of gray,

is appealing.

It draws you in;

makes you want to explore.

Following the lights...

Here I'm sharing a little bit of experimental light-play.

Mix a foggy, damp, grey morning

with various light subjects

and you get this effect.

I like the abstract nature

(is that an oxymoron?)

of this composition.

Going With The Flow

Sometimes the most ordinary objects

suddenly take on a mysterious

artistic flair.

Or not...

At the time,

and still now as I look at this photo,

it is brimming with interest:

lines, light, shadow, reflection, shapes, textures.

It attracts and sustains attention.

Bottom's Up!

A study in

light and shadow,

lines and shapes.

The central oddity

is a view of

a windchime from underneath,

looking upward.

Then there is the night sky,

and the eaves of the house

lit only by the light

of the fixture

outside the back door.

Movement in the center

of the photo

from the breeze

playing with the wind-catcher

dangling below the chimes.

Future Quilt

This is another "looking up" shot.

No flash.

Unretouched.

Standing in the middle of

the sanctuary of a local church

looking directly up into

the cupola.

This design really

looks like it

would make a beautiful quilt.

Les Lumieres

Any guesses?

I was shooting directly up

into a lit chandelier

in a mirrored

passageway

in a hotel in DC.

Light,

mirrors,

topsy-turvy,

carpet patterns,

columns, bannisters,

geometry, lines, bevels.

I did not use the flash

because of the mirrors.

Below is my unretouched photo.

I don't usually "adjust" the pics I post

except for a bit of occasional

creative zooming and cropping.

On this one I adjusted the brightness

to see if the mirrors on the ceiling and walls would appear.

They did, and

SURPRISE!

so did the carpet and columns and bannisters.

Fun.

And a little disorienting.

Fabric Pattern #5

A teeny bit out of focus

because of the low light...

this is a carpet

in a side lobby

at a DC hotel.

My imagination

really goes places

with this pattern.

Highways, macrame,

masks (big eyes!),

labyrinth, Escher,

noodles...

Light, Grass, Rocks

Early morning light

makes long, thin shadow-stripes

from the blades of grass

pushing their way

through this crowd of stones.

Dwelling Place

A little corner of blue heaven

imposing itself 

on pale windowless cubes;

shadows pushing back

to declare their transient dominance;

lines drawn between

light and dark

heaven and earth;

stairway

a rising crescendo

escorting dwellers

to their nightly mausoleum

where they take their repose

beyond the reach of

encroaching shades.

Canted Lamp

This lamppost next to "The Bathhouse"

at Lover's Point in Pacific Grove, CA,

is tilting it's head.

Is it:

a) tired?

b) listening?

c) curious?

d) surprised?

or

e) about to fall unexpectedly on some unfortunate passerby

and initiate an international news event:

"Tourist Does Not See Light"

Wet Leaves

Without getting too lost in the actual details of this picture,

take in the textures, the lines, the sense of movement even though the subjects are still,

the subtle play of the light on the dampness of the leaves.

It's like one of those paintings where if you stare at it long enough

you can see other hidden, subliminal images.

Or maybe it's the fact that I'm listening to Louie Prima sing "Piccolina Lena" while I'm typing this...

Rocks and Grass #1

Rock and grass in the early morning light.

I was amazed at the lines, textures, and colors; and especially by the shadows of the individual blades of grass.  And what looks almost like ancient scratch marks on the prominent stone.
