Pups are basking
while a couple of young bulls elephant seals
(Mirounga angustirostris)
spar playfully.
When these bulls get older,
they will be much,
MUCH
larger.
And they will engage in fierce-sounding combat
for the right to impregnate
their chosen cows.

Love these creatures. My parents lived in Turlock and in 1987 we took my mother over to the Pebble Beach area and one thing I remember - all the beautiful seals!
ReplyDeleteLowell, do you have seals in Florida? I have visited Florida a few times, but I do not remember seeing any seals.... then again, I was always on the lookout for alligators, so... :)
