Chair #15

This bench at a bus stop
seems to be waiting for some companionship.
And the old brick facade
is a bit patched up;
there are hints of its former glory -
the glass brick that
flanks a section of newer brick
must have been a doorway;
and the boarded up sections
apparently were store-front windows;
then there are the pseudo-pillars between those sections,
with different brick down the middle of them
and a little out-cropping to depict the capital;
a line of terra cotta tiles to define the roofline.
The broken globe of the old-fashioned streetlight
subtly punctuates the destitute air of the scene.

May we all enjoy cherished companionship
and deliverance from destitution
in the coming year.

Happy 2019 to one and all!

Clever.

I am not sure what kind of animal
this is or looks like,
but it definitely looks like it knows something.

Feral Appliances

Such a curiosity.
I was stopped at a red light
on my way to work one morning,
and there they were,
a microwave and a fridge.
It looked like they should be
holding up a cardboard sign
asking for help.

Ming's

I have to be honest,
this old sign does not particularly
seduce me to patronize this eatery.
But it does capture my attention
as a piece of art and history.

Unexpected Face #13

Puts me in mind of
a cowboy,
or a railroad engineer,
or a singer in a barbershop quartet.

What's Your Sign?

OK.
I confess.
I am really not sure
what this sign was announcing.
I think,
maybe,
it was a men's clothing store.
The cut-out design
and the neon...
vintage sweetness.

Reading Gives You Wings

Reading can
take you to places
you may never see with your eyes,
bring you knowledge,
feed your imagination,
test your emotions,
nudge your curiosity,
ask and answer questions,
expand your perspectives,
extend your grasp beyond your reach,
introduce you to new friends,
expose dangers,
confirm your interests,
and much, much more.
Read.

Skyscraper

This is what passes for a skyscraper
in Fresno's skyline.

I was focused on the old-school fire escape.
That flight from the penthouse
looks frighteningly steep!

A Touch of Deco

I cannot claim any expertise in recognizing artistic
or design styles, but I think I see art deco in the corners
of this mural; maybe the image itself leans more toward
art nouveau...

Don't ask,

I don't know.
I have not yet summoned the gumption
to visit this establishment during
its hours of operation.

Sweet Gum Leaves

Sweet gum leaves.
These leaves turn from green to bright yellow,
then they slowly turn red,
leaving a yellow handprint
in the center,
which shrinks until the leaf is fully red.
They eventually become a dark, dark red
that is almost black.

I showed the earlier progression from green to yellow

Two for One: Sign and Mural

We have a sign
and we have a rather unusual mural;
and more elements besides!
Lines, shadows, brick edifice,
busy balconies, colorful umbrellas,
bars on windows trilling counterpoint to the brick;
plus blue sky,
a power pole bisecting the frame,
and more.
Can you find the horse's head in the mural?

Galloping Gavotte

Horse gallops
and gavottes,
running and dancing,
finding his feet,
feeling his hooves,
touching down,
rising up,
snorting rainbows,
presenting himself
to the full range
of the empty
expansive
lot
for
parking.

A few pics from Sequoia National Park.
It's tough to realize the scale of these trees

There are people walking through
