Etched Fish

Booth divider in a local taqueria.
They do have amazing fish tacos!

Functional art always captivates me.
Even though this may have been done
with computers and lasers and whatnot
and recreated by machine
dozens or hundreds of times,
someone with substantial artistic talent
had to create the original concept
that became this oft-overlooked
thing of beauty.

And I'm glad the shopowner
found it in his heart
to create an atmosphere
that is both fun and refined
so customers can
appreciate life and beauty
while gobbling delicious food.

Taken 12 January 2011.

  1. I like this shot! The angle of the glass tells me it's a divider in a restaurant and the windows and colors really bring it out well. It is surprising how much we can not notice things in common places. Very nice!

  2. If it were in the lobby of the Plaza Hotel in New York it would get a lot of attention.

  3. Thanks for your comments, everybody! (Clint, I didn't know you were multilingual!)

Yes, Karen, I find myself more and more looking for the uncommon in common places. It has become a delightful personal game for me.

L.D., you are so right. Although I've not been to the Plaza Hotel in NY (yet!), I can imagine a piece like this might be displayed specifically AS a work of art.
