Spiny Succulent Seeks Separation

I suppose I should know the name of this slightly scary but fascinating pile of plants that lives on my doorstep.  I don't.  But I am ceaselessly amazed at the wonders of nature.  The colors, the shapes, the defensive weapons.
Taken in Seaside, California, 24 June 2010.

Camera non pareil (for me, anyway, since it is my only one!): Canon PowerShot A590.

  1. It might be an aloe succulent plant. If so, nice healing properties in the juice as you probably know.

  3. Yes, actually we have an aloe plant a couple of pots over from this one (and one in the kitchen). And you're right this one has a similar appearance; it might be a different variety or something. The colors are different and the "leaves" (?) ..."arms" (?) ...are shorter and fatter on this one, and there're more of them closer together.

And, hello, Berit in Norway. Hej!
